Lost and Found

Well what a strange two and a half weeks I’ve had.

On September the 29 at 12:08pm (EST) I got a message on FaceBook, from a woman in Florida. It read,

Hi Stefan, Was You Born in Australia or Birmingham, England. UK?

As you can imagine I was more than a bit curious as to how this woman could have any idea as to birthplace. I sent my answer and waited patiently for a reply.

Is Your birthday 19th December 1971?

Now she had my attention. I know… It’s not that hard to get that kind of info about a person. Still I couldn’t escape a strange feeling that was coming over me, goose bumps and butterflies.

Before I get into that I realise that some of you might need a little back story.

My Mum, step-dad, two half-siblings and I moved to Australia when I was around 3 or 4. My Mum and dad had split up, he stayed in the UK and I never heard from him.

Now I didn’t find out that my step-dad wasn’t my real dad until I was about 13. That was when Mum told me about my Jamaican father. Yep that’s right boys and girls I’m half Jamaican, and damned proud of it too.

So with that in mind you can understand the impact of her next message.

Hi Stefan, Please don’t be suspicious. I Think I Might be your Aunt.

Once I’d picked myself up off the floor, a flood of questions came rushing out. It turns out that her name is Di and she is the yongest of my fathers siblings. I have another aunt and two uncles and both my paternal grandparents are alive.

So Diane and I have been shooting emails back and forth. Almost one a day. I’ve been emailing my 16 year old cousin, who’s name is very similare to mine. He seems cool.

My Mum is now in contact with my Dad after 35 years of silence. It’s freaky but cool. I’m building myself up to telling Di to give him my email address, but I’m not quite ready for that just yet.

Stay tuned, there will be more on this late breaking news.

Peace.

Vic Police do their part for Global Warming.

Anyone would think that, at a time of dwindling oil supplies and rising oil prices, the Victorian State Government would be looking a hybrid police cars and alternate fuels sources. Seems like a no-brainer to me. But in a radical, some might say downright backwards move, the boys and girl in blue will be tooling around in a fleet of five shiny new Hummers.

Police Assistant Commissioner Gary Jamieson says,

The idea of going to Hummers is that it’s about trying to measure visible impact. So we’ve got to try and introduce something which might look different to our current fleet of vehicles.

Visible impact, how about environmental impact?

The SS Commodore gets around 9 km/litre while the Hummer 3 gets an environmentally friendly 5.9 km/litre.

Now I know I don’t have all the facts. I’m sure the Hummers ordered by the Vic Police are specialy made to be kind to the earth while looking mean to scare the drunks. It’s not like boozed up, testosterone fuelled blokes generally like big cars or anything.

I bet no one noticed…

Not much has changed on the front end of the site, but the back end has had a major overhaul.

In the wee hours of yesterday, I backed up the database, tar’d the htdocs and then hit the delete key on vastneonwolf. Five minutes later the site was back with a new engine.

I had realised that the old CMS I’d been using just wasn’t cut out to be a blog. Sure it’s great for my other site but not for a Vastneonwolf. For that I needed something a little more blog-centric.

Well I have everything running as it should, so I’m off to bed.

It’s only democracy if we like you

Well the people of Palestine have expressed their will by voting for Hamas and it looks like Bush is a tad pissed.

According to Condoleezza Rice “You cannot have one foot in politics and the other in terror.” Unless you are the United States of course.

“I don’t see how you can be a partner in peace if you advocate the destruction of a country as part of your platform and I know you can’t be a partner in peace if your party has got an armed wing,” said Mr. Bush.

I really want to point to the US Army but can’t really justify it other than it sounds good.

Basically I just want to say that if you advocate democratic elections you have to accept who ‘the people’ elect, regardless of how stupid their decision seems. If States ignored each other because they didn’t like the elected officials then America would have been isolated after 2000.
